UNFPA Central African Republic Situation Report – June 2026

In June 2026, the Central African Republic (CAR) faced a convergence of health and security crises, beginning with the government’s validation of an Ebola contingency plan to prevent the virus’s introduction and the subsequent declaration of a cholera outbreak in Bimbo and Mbaïki that resulted in hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths. The humanitarian landscape was further destabilized by armed attacks in the Vakaga prefecture, which forced thousands to flee and left the town of Am-Dafock deserted, and by rising security incidents in Haut-Mbomou that targeted humanitarian actors and forced a temporary suspension of UNFPA and other operations in the south-east. These crises severely restricted humanitarian access, increased protection risks such as conflict-related sexual violence and child mortality, and exacerbated existing vulnerabilities across the region. In response, UNFPA provided critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) support to vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls, across crisis-affected areas. By deploying an integrated approach that combined mobile clinics with support for reference health facilities, UNFPA achieved significant results, including hundreds of assisted births, antenatal and postnatal care visits, and emergency Caesarean sections, alongside extensive family planning and gynaecological services. UNFPA also prioritized protection through targeted GBV awareness sessions, support to safe spaces, and the distribution of dignity kits, while actively working to increase SRH awareness and improve clinical outcomes for sexual assault survivors through comprehensive medical care and community outreach. In 2026, UNFPA requires US $13. 2 million to deliver essential SRH and protection services in the CAR. As of the end of June 2026, UNFPA has mobilized US $2. 2 million of funding. A significant 83% funding gap remains, which is hindering UNFPA’s ability to provide life-saving services to women and girls in need.
