DR Congo: UNFPA Regional Situation Report – Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease Outbreak (1 – 30 June 2026)

As of June 2026, the ongoing Ebola outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus, has escalated into a severe public health crisis, with 406 confirmed cases and 438 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Conversely, Uganda has achieved strong containment of a smaller cluster of 20 confirmed cases, with the majority of cases now recovered. UNFPA is supporting containment and preparedness efforts in the DRC and Uganda, as well as preparedness activities in high-risk neighbouring countries. Collaborating with the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention through the continental Incident Management Support Team, UNFPA directly supports infection prevention and control, continuity of essential services, and risk communication and community engagement. To address the regional Ebola crisis, UNFPA has activated its highest level of emergency response (Level 3) for the DRC and Uganda. UNFPA has been supporting 182 health facilities across the two countries, providing vital reproductive health supplies, personal protection equipment (PPE) and infection prevention materials, as well as delivering training for health staff on Ebola prevention and health facility safety. During June, UNFPA also reached 58, 887 people with sexual and reproductive health services, 81, 582 with gender-based violence prevention and response in the DRC and Uganda. In neighbouring at-risk countries, UNFPA is proactively procuring and strategically prepositioning life-saving supplies, including PPE, specialized isolation tents for pregnant women, and Inter-Agency Reproductive Health kits. UNFPA is also training healthcare and community-based workers on specialized infection protocols, mobilizing to deploy midwives and gender-based violence caseworkers to protect vital maternal health and protection systems from disruption should an Ebola outbreak occur. As the outbreak continues to escalate in the DRC, and other countries remain at high risk, urgent funding is required to sustain critical sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services and implement prevention and preparedness activities. UNFPA requires US $20. 8 million to ensure continued access to vital care for affected communities and prevent further loss of life.
