Need stressed to make workplaces safer workplaces for women

KARACHI: Pakistan’s top anti-harassment body on Tuesday called for greater efforts to make workplaces safer for women. ?Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment (FOSPAH) Chairperson Fauzia Viqar made the remarks at an awareness seminar on workplace harassment at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) here on Tuesday. She said attitudes towards gender equality were gradually changing, but harassment continued to reflect a culture of impunity and deep-rooted inequality. ?Pakistan has made progress in improving women’s access to education, Fauzia Viqar noted; however their participation in the workforce remained below 25 percent. ?She said the low participation rate did not reflect a lack of willingness among women to work but was linked largely to the absence of safe and enabling working environments. ?? FOSPAH Regional Head Sabika Shah briefed participants on the legal framework governing workplace harassment and the mechanisms available for filing complaints. The seminar focused on increasing awareness of legal protections, complaint mechanisms and the role of institutions in creating safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.
