Description The index case was identified in Epidemiological Week 19: a 6-year-old female of Kapengela village who presented at Shangombo District Hospital with fever, maculopapular rash, cough, conjunctivitis and coryza, with unknown vaccination history. A specimen was confirmed positive for Measles IgM antibody by the UTH Virology Laboratory on 16th May 2026, formally declaring the outbreak. On 6th May 2026, the District received an unverified report of a parallel measles outbreak in Rivungu Municipality, Angola, involving 6 suspected cases aged 2–6 years. This cross-border signal was verified in the eIDSR system, prompting activation of the Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT). Since then, the outbreak has grown substantially on the Zambian side while the Angolan side has remained static at 66 cumulative cases and 6 confirmed cases, with no new cases reported in the most recent 24-hour period.
