Yemeni govt forces strike Houthi targets near Mocha

Yemeni government forces carried out air strikes against Houthi targets in the Mocha and Dhubab areas, the country’s armed forces said, as fighting intensifies along Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Brig Gen Majid Abdullah Al Nuzaili, spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, said the strikes destroyed vehicles and weapons and killed several Houthi fighters near the port of Mocha and around the Zaid Al Kharj mall in the city. He said other Houthi members were killed near the water project administration in Mocha, while gatherings of fighters and vehicles were targeted at an animal quarantine facility along the Mocha-Dhubab road, about 11 kilometres from Mocha. Additional Houthi gatherings were also targeted at a former military commander’s headquarters on Mocha’s northern ring road, Al Nuzaili said. No further details about the strikes or casualties were immediately available. Yemen had experienced a relative lull since 2022 following years of fighting between government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-backed Houthis, who seized the capital Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014. The Houthis became increasingly involved in regional hostilities from late 2023, launching attacks on Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea following the outbreak of the Gaza war. Renewed fighting along Yemen’s western coast has since raised fears that the country could slide back into full-scale conflict.
