Devastating flash floods triggered by a glacier-related ice-rock avalanche on 26 August have left communities across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Gorkha and Dhading facing immense loss and destruction. At least 1, 415 people have lost their lives, while 5, 786 remain missing or unaccounted for. The disaster has affected around 20, 000 households, with 84, 000 people, including 22, 000 children, now in need of humanitarian assistance. Homes, markets, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed, disrupting access to essential services and livelihoods. Around 20, 000 households require food assistance, while 65, 000 people need emergency water, sanitation and hygiene assistance. Some 22, 000 children urgently need safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene support. Families also need safe shelter, livelihood support and psychosocial care as they begin their journey towards recovery. World Vision’s response World Vision International Nepal, together with local partners KIRDARC Nepal and Good Neighbors Nepal (GNN), is supporting children and families affected by the floods. As of 23 September, the response has reached 8, 684 people, including 3, 521 children and 258 people with disabilities. The response so far includes: 3, 750 people supported with emergency food packages 2, 325 people, including 930 children, provided with hygiene kits 455 people, including 182 children, supported with shelter kits 860 people supported with bedding sets 559 women and girls supported with dignity kits 116 children supported through two Child Friendly Spaces Water purification supplies, water tanks and other support provided to improve access to safe drinking water Equipment provided to four local institutions to help restart essential services
