KEY HIGHLIGHTS • WFP continues to support flood-affected households in the Eastern Region of Afghanistan while initiating critical winter prepositioning activities. • Malnutrition remains a major concern with urgent support needed to prevent further deterioration in nutritional outcomes. • Humanitarian shipments of essential commodities stranded in Pakistan since October 2025 have all safely arrived in Afghanistan. SITUATION OVERVIEW Humanitarian needs across Afghanistan remain extremely high. The combined effects of a subdued economy, climate shocks, mass returns, aid cuts, and conflict continue to drive worsening conditions. Despite a favorable harvest, household food security is deteriorating due to persistent vulnerabilities, recurrent shocks, and rising prices. Malnutrition persists as a major concern nationwide. Wasting among children under five remains elevated in several provinces, driven by food insecurity, poor dietary diversity, recurrent disease outbreaks, and limited access to health and nutrition services. Sustained support is needed to prevent further deterioration in nutritional outcomes. Localized flash floods continued in August, affecting communities in Nuristan, Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar provinces in the Eastern Region of Afghanistan. Flooding damaged infrastructure and increased the vulnerability of affected households. Humanitarian partners continue to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency assistance for affected populations. As winter approaches, WFP is launching critical prepositioning operations to ensure vulnerable Afghans receive life-saving assistance when needs peak and access becomes more challenging.
