In a significant decision, the United States has announced a phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar, sources said on Wednesday. The US embassy in Islamabad will handle all diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the State Department said. Officials said the move aims to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel and optimise the use of available resources. While the US presence in Peshawar will be reduced, policy priorities will remain unchanged, and engagement with the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will continue, they added. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Pakistan, emphasising the promotion of regional security and economic cooperation. Diplomatic activities will continue in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, and the US mission remains determined to enhance diplomatic relations across Pakistan, the sources added.
