Statement by the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown: Severe rainfall deficits in Sudan (15 October 2026)

Please refer to the attached file. (Damazine, 15 October 2026) Severe rainfall deficits in certain parts of Sudan deepen the existing humanitarian catastrophe that millions of Sudanese are already facing. Malnutrition and illness will inevitably follow, increasing risks to millions of children already impacted by repeated displacement. Immediate life-saving food and nutrition assistance, as well as access to clean water, sanitation and health services, are critical for people facing rainfall deficits coupled with the impact of more than three years of war, particularly in Darfur and parts of Kordofan. Smallholder farmers urgently need support ahead of the winter planting season. The humanitarian community lacks the resources to cover the growing acute needs. Without urgent funding, humanitarian food and nutrition stocks are expected to run out by early 2027, leaving vulnerable families without critical life-saving assistance. The people of Sudan cannot afford another shock. *** For more information, please contact: Dan Teng’o, dan. tengo@un. org; +249 91 253 2791
