Rising food insecurity and malnutrition: the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis reveals rapidly worsening food insecurity and malnutrition conditions in Somalia, including a credible Risk of Famine in Buurhakaba District in Bay Region. Food insecurity: Between April and June 2026, an estimated 6 million people—approximately one-third of the analyzed population are projected to face Crisis or worse levels of food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+), driven by drought, conflict, displacement, and economic pressures. This marks an increase of more than half a million people compared to the initial projection and reflects a rapidly worsening situation (IPC AFI and AMN May 2026). The nutrition situation continues to deteriorate, with an estimated 1. 9 million children under five years of age expected to suffer from acute malnutrition during 2026, including 493, 000 children facing severe acute malnu trition (SAM) and requiring urgent lifesaving treatment. Disease outbreaks: an escalating health emergency is unfolding nationwide. According to the IDSR surveil lance data from the Federal Ministry of Health, at least four active outbreaks—specifically measles, diphtheria, dengue fever, and acute watery diarrhoea (AWD)/ cholera. This multi-front crisis is compounding pressure on a severely strained healthcare infrastruc ture, drastically heightening the threat to vulnerable communities. Population displacement: Worsening climatic condi tions, insecurity, and conflict have triggered wide spread displacement, forcing vulnerable households into overcrowded displacement sites where access to safe water, healthcare services, sanitation facilities, and other essential services remains severely limited.
