KARACHI: The Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Prof. Dr Muhammad Issa Arain, describing him as a “legendary personality” and a “teacher of teachers” whose lifelong dedication to dental education transformed generations of dentists and left a lasting imprint on Pakistan’s dental profession. In an official condolence message issued following his passing, the association expressed profound sorrow over the demise of one of the country’s most respected dental educators and academic leaders. “The Pakistan Dental Association expresses its heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Prof. Issa Arain Sahib,” the statement said. ‘A teacher of teachers’ Remembering Prof. Dr Arain’s remarkable academic career, the PDA described him as “a legendary personality” and “a par excellence teacher of teachers,” noting that countless dental professionals across Pakistan and abroad were trained under his guidance. The association highlighted that even its President, Dr Mahmood Shah (Sitara-i-Imtiaz), was among the many dentists who benefited from Prof. Dr Arain’s mentorship, reflecting the enormous influence he had on successive generations of dental practitioners. Builder of dental institutions The PDA said Prof. Dr Arain played a defining role in establishing and strengthening the Dental Section of the then Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro, laying the academic foundations for what would later evolve into one of Pakistan’s leading centres for dental education. His contributions extended far beyond teaching. Throughout his distinguished career, he was widely regarded as an institution builder whose vision helped shape modern dental education in the country. Following his retirement from Liaquat Medical College, he served as Principal of Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC), Karachi, where he continued mentoring students and contributing to academic excellence. A legacy spanning more than six decades Prof. Dr Arain passed away in Hyderabad on Monday, July 13, after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Asian Hospital, where he breathed his last. He was widely recognized as one of Pakistan’s pioneering dental educators and held the distinction of becoming the first Head of the Institute of Dentistry at Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS). His association with the institution began in 1963, when he joined as a demonstrator after completing his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in Lahore. Over the following decades, he became one of the country’s most respected teachers, mentoring generations of dentists who later assumed leadership roles in clinical practice, academia, research and professional organizations. Students serving around the world The Pakistan Dental Association noted that Prof. Dr Arain’s students are now serving across the world as dental specialists, a reflection of the enduring impact of his commitment to education and professional excellence. Colleagues and former students have consistently remembered him as a disciplined academic, inspiring mentor and compassionate teacher whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. Prayers and condolences Concluding its message, the Pakistan Dental Association prayed for the departed educator, saying: “May Allah Almighty grant him the highest abode in Jannah. Ameen.” The passing of Prof. Dr Muhammad Issa Arain has been widely mourned across Pakistan’s dental community, with professional organizations, academic institutions, colleagues and former students paying tribute to a man whose vision helped shape the country’s modern dental education system.
