The ninth and final spell of monsoon rains is set to begin across Punjab today (Saturday), the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in an alert. The PDMA said that rain is expected in most districts of Punjab from September 12 to 17, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock. According to PDMA Director-General Saif Anwar Jappa, there is a risk of landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas. He said major cities, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad, face a risk of urban flooding, while flash flooding is also possible in rainwater drains. On the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, commissioners, deputy commissioners and district administrations across the province have been directed to complete precautionary measures and remain on alert. The PDMA director general also directed administrations in major cities to take advance measures in view of the risk of urban flooding and possible flash floods in rainwater drains.
