National Newspapers Readership Day: President Zardari reaffirms his faith in a free press

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday reaffirmed his faith in a free press, describing it as the “Fourth Estate” and an important pillar in protecting citizens’ rights, reminding them of their responsibilities towards the state and society, and holding decision-makers accountable. In his message on the occasion of National Newspapers Readership Day, the President said that despite the rapid growth of diverse news media, newspapers continued to play an important role in shaping public opinion and promoting an informed citizenry. He said that newspaper readership was no longer confined to the printed page, as newspapers were increasingly reaching audiences through digital platforms and other forms of online access. President Zardari said the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, along with the targeted dissemination of fake news and disinformation campaigns, was influencing social values, cultural outlook and behaviour. “In this environment, credible and balanced reporting, supported by responsible editorial oversight, is more important than ever, ” he said. The president urged the youth of Pakistan to develop the habit of reading newspapers, whether in print or through digital platforms, while also equipping themselves with modern technological skills. He said he respected the impartial and balanced role of newspapers in strengthening democracy and expected editorial boards to continue giving due attention to socio-economic, religious and political issues, as well as foreign policy, in the broader interest of the state and society. President Zardari expressed hope that the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) would continue contributing to informed national discourse and greater public understanding of regional and global developments.
