KARACHI: A severe heatwave gripped the southern port city of Karachi, with temperatures soaring to 44 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded so far this season, disrupting daily life, academic activities, and business operations on Monday. Charitable organisations, including Alkhidmat Karachi, set up multiple relief camps across different parts of the metropolis to assist people affected by the extreme heat. The initiative came as the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that hot and humid conditions would persist across southern parts of the country. According to the Met Office, temperatures in Karachi are expected to ease slightly on Tuesday, ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. However, the weather will remain hot and humid. Ongoing power outages further aggravated public hardship, while businesses continued to struggle amid prolonged heatwave conditions this year. Elsewhere in the country, the highest temperatures were recorded in Turbat and Mithi at 45 degrees Celsius, followed by Karachi, Sibi, Lasbela, and Thatta, each recording 44 degrees Celsius. Mainly hot and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country, with very hot conditions likely in southern regions. Rain accompanied by windstorms or thunderstorms is expected at isolated locations in upper and western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and nearby hilly areas. To help residents cope with rising temperatures and heat-related risks, Alkhidmat Karachi launched a citywide heat relief initiative, establishing 13 emergency camps across major commuter routes and densely populated areas. The camps have been set up in North Karachi and New Karachi; Nazimabad (Gol Market) and Liaquatabad; Lyari and Orangi Town; Model Colony and Lasbela; New M. A.
