The government has appointed Imran Sarwar as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for a three-year term with immediate effect. NBP disclosed the development in a filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday. “We have to inform you that the Government of Pakistan, Finance Division, vide Notification No. F. No. 1(9) Bkg- III/2022-696 dated September 3, 2026, has appointed Imran Sarwar as President/CEO for a period of three years, with immediate effect, subject to Fit & Proper Test clearance by State Bank of Pakistan, ” read the notice. NBP is one of the country’s largest commercial banks. Its leadership has seen several developments in recent years, particularly concerning the President/CEO and Board of Directors. Rehmat Ali Hasnie was previously assigned the role of President/CEO of NBP on May 12, 2022, a role he held until his tenure expired on August 21, 2026. Days ago, Abdul Wahid Sethi assumed charge as the Acting President & CEO of NBP, following the completion of the tenure of the bank’s previous chief. NBP delivered a resilient performance in the first half of calendar year 2026, posting a profit before tax of Rs67. 3 billion and a profit after tax of Rs32. 4 billion, translating into earnings per share of Rs15. 23 for the half year ended June 30, 2026.
