Dar calls for end to Israeli occupation at Gaza peace meeting

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories at a high-level meeting convened by France, the United Kingdom and Canada on Wednesday. Dar delivered Pakistan’s statement at the High-Level International Meeting on the Two-State Solution, titled “The Road Ahead: One Year After the New York Declaration and the Comprehensive 20-point Peace Plan, ” the Foreign Office said. The meeting was convened by France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Opening statements were delivered by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Dar underscored the urgency of ending the suffering in Gaza and ensuring the unhindered provision of humanitarian assistance. He also called for advancing an irreversible political process toward an independent, sovereign and contiguous Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Highlighting Pakistan’s role in various initiatives on the Palestine issue, Dar said: “Ultimately, all these efforts must converge on one objective: ending the occupation and realising the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination. ” The meeting was attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (via video link), Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, European Council President António Costa, Board of Peace High Representative for Gaza Nickolay Mladenov, Netherlands’ Prime Minister Rob Jetten, and Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
