A passenger bus overturned in Iran’s central Markazi province, killing 11 people and injuring 24 others, state television reported Saturday. The crash occurred on the Saveh-Hamedan freeway, with provincial traffic police blaming driver fatigue and drowsiness. Authorities did not immediately disclose where the bus was headed. Iran has one of the world’s highest road death rates, with more than 17, 000 people killed in traffic crashes each year. Experts attribute the high toll to unsafe vehicles, widespread violations of traffic rules and inadequate emergency services. Earlier this month, a fuel tanker crashed into other vehicles and caught fire near the western city of Sanandaj, killing 11 people and injuring seven others.
