Abnormal heat continues to threaten many parts of northern and eastern Africa, Hispaniola, Central America, and northern South America. Drought is expanding in parts of Central America. South Africa sees flooding. Africa Weather Hazards Abnormal heat is expected in North and Eastern Africa, while heavy rainfall and flood risks are predicted in West and Southern Africa. 1) The Sudd wetlands of South Sudan continue to experience inundation. 2) Severe rainfall deficits across large parts of East Africa over the past 90 days have led to abnormal dryness. As a result, conditions have been upgraded to “Drought” across southern South Sudan and parts of Ethiopia’s northern, eastern, and central regions. An abnormal dryness polygon has also expanded westward into parts of Chad. 3) Southeastern Mali and central and eastern Liberia remain under abnormal dryness due to sustained below-average rainfall. 4) Persistent heavy rainfall continues to pose an elevated risk of flooding across southern and southeastern Nigeria, and the western part of Cameroon. Heavy rainfall and associated high runoffs elevate the risk of flooding in Sierra Leone, western Liberia, Lesotho, Eswatini, and northern, central, and eastern parts of South Africa and surrounding areas. 5) In the coming week, abnormal heat is expected across northern and central Morocco, Western Sahara, western Mauritania, parts of Sudan, South Sudan, DR Congo, Uganda, western and eastern Ethiopia, and western Eritrea. 6) Moderate to heavy rainfall over the month, along with a forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall, maintains a high alert for flash flooding in western Ethiopia. Flooding has been reported in Tawila town in western Sudan, which displaced hundreds of people and destroyed several homes.
