World: Global Weather Hazards Summary, July 30, 2026 – Aug 05, 2026

Country: World Source: Famine Early Warning System Network Please refer to the attached file. Global Overview: El Niño is present. Flood risk across Africa, northern and eastern Central Asia, eastern and southern Central America, and northern South America. Africa Weather Hazards Persistent dryness continues across East Africa, while flood alerts stay active in coastal West Africa due to heavy rains. 1) Inundation continues in the Sudd wetlands of South Sudan. 2) Severe rainfall deficits across large parts of East Africa over the past 90 days have resulted in abnormal dryness. Due to this persistent dryness, conditions have been upgraded to “Drought” across the equatorial provinces of South Sudan as well as eastern, central, and north-central Ethiopia. 3) Southern Mali, and central and eastern Liberia continue to experience abnormal dryness due to sustained below-average rainfall. 4) Persistent and forecasted localized heavy rainfall maintains an elevated risk of flooding across coastal areas of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, southeastern Nigeria, and western Cameroon. 5) A recent 40°C+ heatwave across Mediterranean coastal areas resulted in wildfires in Algeria that spread to Morocco and Tunisia. In the coming week, abnormal heat will shrink to northeastern Algeria and Morocco, while separate areas of abnormal heat are expected across southeastern South Sudan, southwestern and eastern Ethiopia, and parts of southeastern Eritrea. 6) As heavy rainfall migrates slightly northward, the high alert for flash flooding is shifting north across western Ethiopia. 7) Heavy rainfall (up to 100 mm) on July 27–28 triggered coastal flooding, road disruptions, and damage near KuGompo along South Africa’s southeastern coast; although the alert level is downgraded, the area remains under elevated risk.
