Violation of IWT an attack on sovereignty: Azma

LAHORE: Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari has said that India’s BJP-led government has adopted a fascist approach, believing it can openly violate the Indus Waters Treaty and international laws governing transboundary water distribution without facing accountability. She stated that the Indian government’s assumption that it is beyond international scrutiny is a grave miscalculation. Azma Bokhari said that Narendra Modi and his supporters should remember that Pakistan has dispelled India’s misconceptions on numerous occasions in the past and possesses the resolve and capability to take every necessary step to safeguard its national interests. The Minister emphasized that the Indus River is the lifeline of Pakistan’s agriculture, economy, and national survival. Any aggression against Pakistan’s water resources or any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty, she said, would not only constitute a breach of international law but would also amount to a direct challenge to Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Azma Bokhari reaffirmed that Pakistan will never compromise on its national security, water rights, or the interests of its people. She stressed that any illegal action or provocation concerning the Indus River would not be tolerated, adding that Pakistan will continue to raise its legitimate concerns forcefully at every relevant international forum to protect its lawful rights.
