UNICEF Burundi Humanitarian Situation Report No. 21, 30 June 2026

Countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, United Republic of Tanzania Source: UN Children’s Fund Please refer to the attached file. Situation Overview & Humanitarian Needs In June 2026, Burundi’s humanitarian situation remained shaped by largescale population movements, public health risks, and climate-related threats. The biometric registration of refugees in Busuma site was completed, improving the accuracy of assistance planning. Since the launch of voluntary repatriation on 23 April, more than 9, 000 Congolese refugees have returned to the DRC, while approximately 54, 000 refugees remain in the site (Busuma). The return of Burundian refugees from Tanzania continued at a high pace, surpassing 100, 000 returnees since January 2026. With the official closure of Nyarugusu camp scheduled for 30 June, around 5, 000 refugees remained in the camp. The continued influx of returnees is placing increasing pressure on basic social services, particularly education, health, WASH and child protection services in the main areas of return. Humanitarian partners also intensified preparedness discussions for a potential El Niño shock through inter-sector coordination mechanisms, despite persistent resource gaps affecting the response to populations impacted by the Gatumba floods. At the same time, national preparedness for a potential Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak was further strengthened through regular Steering Committee and technical sub-committee meetings, enhanced contingency planning, resource mobilization and partner coordination. The epidemiological situation remained under close monitoring, particularly regarding Ebola, cholera, Mpox and other epidemic-prone diseases. Meanwhile, food insecurity and acute malnutrition continued to affect vulnerable refugees, returnees and host populations, sustaining humanitarian needs across the country.
