Country: Solomon Islands Source: United Nations Population Fund Please refer to the attached file. Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila (Category 5) has triggered a maternal health and protection emergency in the Solomon Islands, affecting Western, Choiseul, Isabel, Guadalcanal and Central Islands Provinces. A State of Disaster has been declared for Choiseul and Western Provinces. There are an estimated 3, 640 pregnant women in the affected areas including approximately 400 expected to give birth within the next month, many of whom face increased risks without access to skilled care due to severe damage to health facilities and disrupted services. Displacement, loss of shelter and limited access to water and livelihoods are increasing the risk of exposure to gender-based violence (GBV), compounding an already high prevalence in the country. UNFPA is delivering life-saving interventions to restore access to critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including safe delivery. Interventions include mobile outreach services, establishment of women and girls’ friendly spaces, distribution of dignity and menstrual hygiene kits, provision of cash assistance for pregnant women and restoration of damaged health facilities. UNFPA urgently requires US$1. 6 million to reach 16, 000 women and girls with life-saving services. Without immediate funding, women and girls will continue to face preventable maternal deaths, unmet reproductive health needs and increased exposure to gender-based violence.
