Syria: UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA) Humanitarian Situation Report No. 2 (1 January to 31 December 2025)

HIGHLIGHTS In 2025, the MENA region faced overlapping crises including conflict, displacement, economic collapse, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks, placing children at risk and disrupting access to services. In response, UNICEF delivered lifesaving support across the region. In Algeria, 12, 300 people, 25 per cent children, were vaccinated against diphtheria in response to an outbreak. In Djibouti, 2, 720 children aged 6–59 months were screened for wasting, enabling early detection and treatment of malnutrition. In Egypt, 15, 239 Palestinian children received cash support for digital learning to ensure learning continuity. In Iran, 1, 100 children in street situations received humanitarian cash assistance to reduce protection risks. In Iraq, 13, 284 returning children, 57 per cent girls, were supported with case management, birth registration, and civil documentation. In Jordan, wastewater system rehabilitation and upgrades improved services for 40, 245 people across ten refugee camps. In Lebanon, 7, 850 winterization kits were distributed to young children living in and around Palestinian camps and gatherings. In Libya, 103 unaccompanied and separated children were identified and supported with specialised protection services. In Morocco, 789 children on the move accessed protection and social support services. In Syria, UNICEF delivered lifesaving nutrition supplies to prevent and treat malnutrition among vulnerable children. In Tunisia, nearly 100 children on the move gained regular access to learning materials through UNICEF-supported initiatives. The MENA Regional Office provided sustained technical support to Country Offices to strengthen emergency preparedness, coordination, and child-centred responses across the region.
