Surjani Town murder suspect killed in alleged police encounter

The main suspect in the murder of a woman and her three children in Karachi’s Surjani Town was killed in an exchange of fire with police on Thursday, officials said, in a significant development in a case that had shocked the city. Police said Humayun was taken to the crime scene in Sector 7-D for identification and site inspection when he allegedly snatched a weapon from an escorting police official and opened indiscriminate fire. One police official was seriously injured in the firing. Police said they returned fire immediately, killing Humayun, who was in custody at the time, at the scene. Additional police personnel cordoned off the area shortly after the incident, and the injured official was moved to hospital for treatment. Arrest and confession Karachi police had earlier arrested Humayun in connection with the killing of Mahwish and her three children and claimed to have recovered the alleged murder weapon from his possession. Addressing a press conference, DIG West Irfan Baloch said Humayun had confessed to killing the woman and her three children. According to the DIG, the suspect had lived as a tenant in the family’s house around a year and a half earlier and was identified as the brother-in-law of the woman’s husband. Baloch said Humayun, a resident of New Karachi, reached the woman’s home at around 2: 30pm on the day of the killings, knowing her husband would not be present. The DIG said the suspect attempted to sexually assault the woman, and killed her and one of her daughters when she resisted. When the other children returned from a madressah at around 3pm, Humayun allegedly opened the door for them and killed them as well. According to police, the suspect remained at the house until around 4pm and attempted to stage the killings as a robbery before fleeing. Investigators later traced him through evidence and information gathered during the probe, the DIG said. The bodies of Mahwish and her three children were found at their home in Sector 7-D of Surjani Town two days before Humayun’s arrest.
