Description TC Maila started to develop on 4 April 2026 and intensified to a Category 5 cyclone by 8 April 2026. On the 10 April, the government declared a State of Disaster for Western and Choiseul province. The system gradually weakened to a tropical low by 11 April 2026. The most severe impacts have been reported in Western Province, with significant damage also recorded in Choiseul and Isabel Provinces. One loss of life has been reported in Wagina and seven people remain missing in Marovo as of 13 April. About 21 health facilities have been impacted. The WASH situation on Simbo Island is considered critical, due to groundwater contamination and damaged water systems. A suspected diarrhoeal outbreak has been reported in Babanga and Simbo. An unconfirmed number of people remain displaced, facing shortages of food and water. About 31, 945 individuals require emergency shelter and essential household items. 59 schools has been damaged affecting 2000 children in Western and Choiseul provinces. Request For Assistance Government Requests International Assistance No NS Requests International Assistance Yes Information Bulletin Published Requested Actions taken by RCRC General Other Summary: – Actions taken by National Society General Damage/Needs assessment Relief/Supply distribution Summary SIRC mobilized personnel to conduct damage and impact assessment. As communication and access remain limited, assessment will continue in the following weeks. SIRC has activated its National EOC as the coordination point with the affected branches. The Solomon Islands Red Cross is utilizing pre-positioned stocks for immediate distribution. SIRC is requesting a DREF operation that will target 31, 945 people and provide shelter relief items, basic humanitarian health services, and environmental cleaning activities. Actions taken by Federation General Other Summary IFRC Country Cluster Delegation monitors the system development, impact and forecast and communicates and coordinates with SIRCS on daily basis for update and support required. Technical support is provided in developing DREF plan and budget. The Asia Pacific Regional Office shares information across the network and supports coordinated response and DREF processes. APRO has analysed and generated CCA and maps. Actions taken by others WASH: • World Vision International has sent 4 staff to support the assessment on one island and distributed 98 pieces of Hygiene Kits and 210 collapsible Jerrycans to nearly 100 HH. • UNICEF and MHMS have deployed over 1100 water containers or buckets, 200 tap filters, 1675 units of WASH & Dignity Kits • RWASH staff are also being deployed to Choiseul and Western province to support the ground coordination of supplies, providing training to install the water filters and distribution of supplies. • ADRA has distributed over 100 pcs of soap, and 100 packages of Hygiene Kits in Western Province. Health: UNFPA and UNICEF dispatched medical supplies and the Ministry of Health sent pharmaceuticals and medicals consumables to Western Province on 14 April. UNFPA sent 50 Dignity kits and reproductive health kits to Honiara for dispatch. IOM delivers NFIs, including solar lamps, kitchen sets, and blankets Shelter: IOM is activating the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) to formalize data collection on evacuees. ADRA is conducting rapid on-site assessments. Education: UNICEF will provide tents for temporary learning spaces and distributes teaching and learning materials. Coordination: National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) fully activated. OCHA IMO desployed to the NEOC supporting Initial Damage Assessment. Relief operations are constrained by limited availability of functional boats and fuel. There is a critical need for assessments across all sectors, challenged by remote locations, adverse weather, and limited communications.
