Sindh has expanded public transport network: Sharjeel

KARACHI: The Sindh government is moving to strengthen public transport connectivity in upper Sindh with the launch of a new Peoples Bus Service route linking Larkana with Shahdadkot via Qambar from September 18. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon having portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit, announced the initiative while chairing a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department here. The meeting reviewed the expansion of public transport services, new routes and measures to improve commuter facilities across the province. The new route is expected to provide a more reliable, affordable and modern transport link for residents of Larkana, Qambar, Shahdadkot and surrounding areas, strengthening connectivity between the three important urban centres. Memon directed the concerned authorities to ensure that all essential passenger facilities are available when the service becomes operational. He said the government was pursuing a policy of expanding the Peoples Bus Service to cities and districts beyond Karachi to provide citizens with safe, comfortable and affordable public transport. The meeting also reviewed the progress of the Green Line and Orange Line BRT services. The Senior Minister said ridership on the Green Line had reached 88,000 passengers, while the Orange Line was carrying more than 11,000 passengers daily, indicating growing public dependence on mass-transit services. He also announced that Pink Scooties would soon be distributed among eligible women in Mirpurkhas, reiterating that improving women’s mobility remained a priority for the Sindh government. He said initiatives such as Pink Scooties and Pink Buses were aimed at providing women with greater access to safe and convenient transportation. Officials also briefed the meeting on route planning for additional double-decker and electric buses. Memon directed the department to finalise the routes and complete the necessary preparations so that the new services could be introduced at the earliest.
