KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday said the activation of Treatment Plant-I (TP-I) under the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan S-III is a major step towards improving the city’s sewerage system. In a statement, Sharjeel Memon, who holds portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit, said the provincial government had allocated Rs5 billion for secondary treatment to enable the plant’s immediate activation, with its capacity planned to increase from 51 million gallons per day (mgd) to 100 mgd. He said the S-III project includes about 56 kilometres of Lyari and Malir trunk sewers to convey wastewater to treatment plants. Treated wastewater could also be used for industrial purposes, reducing pressure on freshwater resources. The Senior Minister said modern treatment facilities, an efficient trunk sewer network and reuse of treated wastewater could provide a sustainable solution to Karachi’s sewerage problems while protecting the environment and public health. He said the Sindh government would continue practical measures to improve basic services for Karachi’s residents. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
