PESHAWAR: Renowned cleric and former JUI-F affiliated member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Maulana Muhammad Idrees was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday. According to police, he left for Darul Uloom Noumania from his home in Tarangzai. However, shortly before he arrived at his destination, armed assailants fired at his vehicle in the Tariqabad Utmanzai area. Maulana Idrees hailed from Charsadda’s Tarangzai area. He was also the JUI-F district ameer. Two police personnel accompanying him were also injured in the incident. Police had obtained CCTV footage of the incident. The cleric’s body was subsequently shifted to the District Headquarter Hospital. The deceased was the son-in-law of renowned cleric Maulana Hassan Jan, a former member of the National Assembly was also martyred by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for opposing armed struggle. The KP Inspector General of Police (IGP) has taken strict notice of the firing on renowned religious scholar Maulana Muhammad Idrees and formed joint investigation teams comprising the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and district police. According to the initial report of the investigation team, Maulana Muhammad Idrees was targeted by four terrorists.
