Power breakdown at Dhabeji station disrupts water supply

KARACHI: A major power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station on Sunday rendered 10 of its 21 pumps inoperative, causing an estimated shortage of 150 million gallons of water in the city. Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) spokesman said power supply to the Third Phase, Fourth Phase and K-III pump houses was suspended around 6a. m. following a fault in the main electricity cable supplying the pumping station. The outage brought 10 pumps to a halt, significantly reducing the volume of water being supplied from Dhabeji to Karachi. Several areas were affected, including Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal, Malir, Gulshan, Jinnah Town, Lyari, Saddar, North Karachi and New Karachi. K-Electric informed the water utility that the disruption had been caused by a cable fault. The KWSC administration remained in contact with K-Electric to ensure early restoration of power at the pumping station, the spokesperson said. He added that the affected pumps would be restored immediately after electricity was resumed and emergency measures would be taken to normalise water supplies across the city.
