Polling was underway on Sunday in the by-election for National Assembly constituency NA-168 in Bahawalpur, which will continue without a break until 5pm. A total of 483, 143 voters are registered in the constituency. For the by-election, 292 polling stations and 896 polling booths have been established, with 16 polling stations declared highly sensitive. Twenty candidates are contesting the by-election, but a close contest is expected between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Malik Munir Iqbal Channar and independent candidate Wali Dad Cheema. The seat fell vacant following the death of Malik Iqbal Channar. His son, Munir Iqbal Channar, is contesting with the support of both the PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), while independent candidate Wali Dad Cheema is backed by his father, National Assembly member Tariq Bashir Cheema. A total of 3, 022 police officers, personnel and other security officials have been deployed to ensure security during the polling.
