Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed authorities to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Pakistan, calling it vital for reducing fuel imports and strengthening energy security. Chairing a high-level meeting, the prime minister urged officials to speed up ongoing efforts under the National EV Policy. Officials briefed the meeting that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars. So far, 123 applications have been received for EV charging stations. The government is targeting 30% of all vehicles to shift to electric power within five years, a move expected to save up to $4. 5 billion in fuel costs. The meeting was also informed that government employees up to Grade 16 will be offered electric bikes on easy instalments. Sharif stressed the need for transparency in subsidy schemes for low-income groups and called for faster implementation to expand access. He said wider EV adoption would not only cut the import bill but also support environmental protection and long-term energy sustainability. The meeting was attended by key cabinet members, senior officials, and economic policymakers.
