Over 1.5 million SIM cards linked to deceased persons uncovered

More than 1. 5 million mobile SIM cards are still being used under the names of deceased individuals, prompting authorities to consider new measures to improve data security and block the services. According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, during a recent review, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) found that these SIMs remain active despite the cancellation of identity cards following the issuance of death certificates. Authorities described the situation as a serious concern for data integrity and national security. NADRA records further show that around 8. 1 million SIM cards are currently active on identity cards that require renewal. Officials warned that SIMs registered on expired identity documents may also be blocked as part of efforts to ensure accurate record-keeping. They indicated that failure to renew identity cards on time could lead to additional fees and penalties in the next financial year. NADRA has urged citizens to renew their identity cards promptly and update the ownership details of their SIM cards to avoid disruption. Earlier, on 9 April, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) also advised the public to keep their identity records up to date to ensure uninterrupted mobile services. The authority warned that SIM cards linked to expired documents or registered in another person’s name could be blocked at any time. According to officials, the PTA is working to maintain smooth mobile connectivity across the country and has stressed the importance of timely updates to personal data. Citizens have been advised to renew their expired identity cards without delay to prevent inconvenience. In a related development, Islamabad International Airport became the first airport in the country to introduce 5G services on 2 April 2026. The move marks an important step in the country’s digital progress, allowing passengers to access faster internet and improved digital facilities through collaboration with a private mobile operator. Authorities said the expansion of advanced services such as 5G makes it even more important to maintain accurate and secure identity records across all systems. Reporter: Kaleem Akhtar
