This Weekly Bulletin focuses on public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African Region. This week’s articles cover: Diphtheria, Nigeria Measles, Cameroon End of outbreak declaration, cholera in Malawi For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation, is provided. A table is provided at the end of the bulletin with information on all new and ongoing public health events currently being monitored in the region, as well as recent events that have been controlled and closed. Major issues and challenges include Diphtheria in Nigeria: Diphtheria remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with transmission highly concentrated in northern states, particularly Kano, Bauchi, Katsina, Borno and Sokoto, which account for most cumulative cases. Persistent immunity gaps, including large zero-dose and undervaccinated populations, continue to drive transmission. Inadequate primaryseries and booster vaccination coverage leaves susceptible populations among older children, adolescents and adults. Surveillance and reporting backlogs, alongside data-quality limitations, hinder accurate assessment and targeted response efforts. The situation is further exacerbated by insecurity, population displacement, disruptions in vaccine and essential supply availability, and substantial subnational inequities in immunization coverage and access to health services, complicating outbreak control efforts across affected communities.
