National U-19 championship to commence from today

LAHORE: The National Under-19 Championship will begin today in which as many as 20 U-19 teams from 16 cricket regions will feature. The National U-19 Cup (one-day event) will begin from Saturday (19th September). Among the 16 regions, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Sialkot will have two teams each in both tournaments. Around 400 players will be in action across the two tournaments where they will have the opportunity to play red-ball cricket in the National U-19 Championship, followed by white-ball cricket in the National U-19 Cup against the same opponent in the same round, a PCB spokesman, said. The teams will compete for a winners’ prize of PKR two million, while the runners-up will collect PKR one million. The tournaments will provide players an opportunity to stake a claim for places in the Pakistan U-19 side for upcoming international assignments. Pakistan U-19 is currently in England, taking part in a bilateral series against England U-19. As per the format of the events, the 20 teams have been divided into four groups, with five teams in each group. The top two sides from each group will progress to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winners will advance to the semi-finals, with the winners of the two semi-finals progressing to the final. The final of the National U-19 Cup will be staged on 24 October, while the final of the National U-19 Championship – a four-day affair will be played from 3rd to 6th November.
