Description Continuous heavy rainfall caused river water levels to rise, resulting in flooding across Laymyethna Township, Ayeyarwady Region on 31 July 2026. Floodwaters inundated residential areas, agricultural land, roads, and public infrastructure, affecting people’s safety, livelihoods, and access to essential services. In response, MRCS Ayeyarwady Region activated trained National Disaster Response Team (NDRT) members to conduct a Rapid Needs Assessment using available resources under the MRCS Emergency Management Fund (EMF). A rapid assessment found approximately 20, 317 people across 16 villages, were affected and causing widespread displacement and damage to homes and livelihoods. The flooding has forced many families to seek temporary shelter, while others remain in their communities or are staying with relatives as they continue to monitor the evolving flood situation. A total of nine temporary relief camps have been established, currently accommodating 441 households (approximately 1, 411 people ). In addition, around 1, 200 houses have been affected by the flooding, highlighting the significant impact on local communities. The assessment also reported six missing persons, underscoring the humanitarian concerns arising from the disaster. The findings indicate an urgent need for continued humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelter, relief items, safe drinking water, sanitation, health services, and ongoing monitoring of the flood situation to support affected communities and facilitate timely response efforts. United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners stand ready to support affected populations through coordinated emergency assistance, including food, safe drinking water, shelter, health care, and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) services, drawing on established flood-response mechanisms that have previously been activated in Bago and other flood-affected areas of Myanmar. Private donors, community-based organizations (CBOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), and local volunteer groups have supported flood-affected communities in Ayeyarwady Region by providing emergency food, clean drinking water, clothing, hygiene kits, and cash assistance, while also helping with evacuations, temporary shelter management, and the distribution of relief supplies to vulnerable households. These local actors have played an important role in reaching affected communities quickly, complementing government and humanitarian response efforts, and supporting early recovery activities in flood-impacted areas.
