Description Heavy rainfall on 1 August 2026 caused river and flash flooding in several parts of Ulaanbaatar, particularly in Khan-Uul and Songino-Khairkhan districts. The Tuul River exceeded the dangerous flood level and overflowed near the Biocombinat area, flooding homes, businesses, and public facilities. More than 190 people required rescue or evacuation assistance across at least three affected areas. Two children were found unconscious after being swept away by floodwater, received emergency first aid, and were transferred to hospital. No deaths or missing persons were reported. A preliminary assessment in Khan-Uul District identified 22 affected households, of which 20 were low-income or otherwise vulnerable. At least 65 people were evacuated, 38 were initially accommodated in temporary shelter, and 10 people remained displaced as of 4 August because their homes were not yet safe for return. The assessment identified 22 flood-affected households, all requiring humanitarian support, including 20 households classified as low-income or otherwise vulnerable. The local Red Cross branch also monitored the situation of evacuated residents who were unable to return safely to their homes. Local Red Cross Branches are coordinating with district authorities and relevant emergency-response organizations; conducting an initial assessment of affected households and their priority needs; monitoring people staying in temporary shelters; identifying urgent needs for food, hygiene supplies, cleaning and disinfection materials, essential household items and early recovery assistance; disseminating key messages on before, during and after the flood; and submitting situation updates. Based on the findings, the MRCS is planning to distribute hygiene kits to all 22 affected vulnerable households in Khan-Uul District Red Cross Branch to support the cleaning and disinfection of flood-affected homes and surrounding areas. Actions taken by others The Capital City Emergency Management Department, police, Khan-Uul District Governor’s Office, and other relevant authorities deployed response teams to the affected areas and carried out rescue, evacuation, and flood-recovery operations. The key actions include, rescueing people trapped or swept away by floodwater; providing emergency first aid and transferring injured people to a medical facility; evacuating residents from high-risk areas to safe locations; arranging temporary accomodations for displaced people; pumping floodwater from affected homes and surrounding areas; comducting cleaning, debris-removal, sanitation and disinfection activities; assessing damage and monitoring conditions in affected communities; restricting access to dangerous locations where necessary; and issuing public warnings on continued rainfall, rising river levels and flash-flood risks. Authorities continue to implement recovery measures and assess when displaced households can safely return to their homes.
