KARACHI: A House Officer from Karachi Medical & Dental College (KMDC) has claimed first place in the Dental Photography Competition at Dentalnnovate 3. 0, showcasing how skill, precision and creativity can outweigh expensive equipment in clinical photography. Dr Syed Areeb Aamir earned the top award after impressing judges with his dental photography and post-processing techniques during the competition held at Karachi Expo Centre on 24 June 2026. The competition challenged participants from across Sindh to capture high-quality intraoral, extraoral and precisely timed clinical photographs, placing equal emphasis on technical accuracy, composition, lighting and presentation. Skill over expensive equipment One of the most striking aspects of Dr Aamir’s achievement was the equipment he used. According to the information shared with Dental News Pakistan, he captured the winning images using a Google Pixel 2 smartphone, competing against participants using significantly newer and more expensive devices. The result demonstrated that success in clinical photography depends not only on camera specifications but also on a photographer’s understanding of lighting, framing, timing, editing and clinical presentation. Dr Aamir attributed the quality of his work to careful image composition, precise shooting angles and meticulous editing techniques that enhanced the clinical photographs while maintaining professional standards. Dental photography plays an important role in modern dentistry Clinical photography has become an increasingly valuable component of contemporary dental practice. High-quality photographs assist clinicians in documenting cases, treatment planning, monitoring patient progress, communicating with patients, preparing scientific presentations and contributing to dental education and research. Competitions such as Dentalnnovate 3. 0 encourage young dental professionals to refine these skills while promoting higher standards of clinical documentation. Teamwork behind the winning entry Dr Aamir acknowledged that the achievement was also the result of teamwork. He thanked his co-participants, Dr Anusha Ahmed and Dr Asma bint-e Adil, for their invaluable support throughout the competition. According to the team, Dr Anusha Ahmed served as the clinical model for the winning photographs, while Dr Asma bint-e Adil assisted throughout the process by helping with image capture, cheek retraction, lighting adjustments, background preparation and overall organization during the shoot. Their coordinated efforts helped produce the final photographs that secured first place. A memorable achievement Reflecting on the competition, Dr Aamir said: “Competing with the best across Sindh was an honor—winning made the journey even more unforgettable.” His success highlights the growing emphasis on innovation, technical excellence and practical clinical skills among Pakistan’s young dental professionals. The achievement also reflects Karachi Medical & Dental College’s continued presence in student and house officer competitions that encourage excellence in research, education and clinical practice.
