Islamabad, five Punjab districts: Ministry approves deployment of Rangers

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has approved the deployment of Rangers in the federal capital and different districts of Punjab province to assist civil law enforcement in maintaining law and order ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march on September 27. According to a notification issued here, pursuant to the request made by the Chief Commissioner, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration and government of the Punjab, the federal government is pleased to authorize the deployment of sufficient strength of troops of Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) in ICT and different districts of Punjab province. The Rangers have been deployed under Sections 7(b) and 10 of the Pakistan Rangers Ordinance, 1959 and Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 to discharge such functions as specified under the Ordinance and Act ibid to be authorized by the Chief Commissioner, Islamabad/Provincial Government. The notification states that the deployed personnel may respond appropriately in self-defence to any threats or violent activities encountered in the course of their duties, in accordance with the rules and regulations in force.
