Islamabad Dental Hospital treats 1,100 patients free of cost during five-day oral health camp

ISLAMABAD: In a major community outreach initiative aimed at improving access to oral healthcare, Islamabad Dental Hospital (IDH) provided free dental treatment to 1, 100 patients and conducted examinations for 1, 500 individuals during a recently held five-day dental camp. Organized by the Department of Community Dentistry, the initiative sought to address unmet oral healthcare needs by removing financial barriers that often prevent patients from seeking timely treatment. The camp offered consultations and clinical procedures entirely free of charge, enabling people from surrounding communities to receive care that many might otherwise have delayed or foregone. The camp was conducted under the strategic leadership of Executive Director Dr. Khurshid Ahmed and Director Dr. Maham Niazi, reflecting the institution’s commitment to expanding access to preventive and restorative oral healthcare services. Patients received treatment through multiple departments, including diagnostics, operative dentistry, periodontology, and prosthodontics. By bringing together specialists and support staff across disciplines, Islamabad Dental Hospital ensured that patients benefited from a broad range of services tailored to their oral health needs. Hospital officials said the initiative was designed not only to provide immediate relief to patients suffering from dental problems but also to strengthen awareness about preventive oral healthcare and the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene. In collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive Pakistan, the camp integrated treatment with oral health education. Participants received complimentary toothbrushes and toothpaste, while dental professionals provided personalized instructions on brushing techniques and daily oral hygiene practices. According to the organizers, preventive education remains a key pillar of community dentistry because many common oral diseases, including tooth decay and gum disease, are largely preventable through improved hygiene and timely dental checkups. Under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Khurshid Ahmed and Director Dr. Maham Niazi, the Department of Community Dentistry successfully implemented the camp as part of Islamabad Dental Hospital’s broader mission to promote equitable access to healthcare and strengthen preventive dentistry at the community level. Public health experts have increasingly emphasized that untreated oral diseases can affect nutrition, speech, overall health, and quality of life. Expanding access to affordable or free dental services, they say, is essential for reducing the burden of oral diseases, particularly among underserved populations. By combining clinical treatment with education and awareness, the five-day camp demonstrated how community-based dental programs can make a meaningful contribution to public health while encouraging healthier habits that extend beyond the dental chair. With 1, 500 patients examined and 1, 100 treated free of cost, the initiative represents one of the notable recent examples of community dentistry in action, underscoring the growing importance of preventive oral healthcare and public-private collaboration in improving access to essential dental services in Pakistan.
