Iranian interior minister arrives in Pakistan for high-level talks with PM, Field Marshal

Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Islamabad on Monday on an official visit, leading a high-level delegation for talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussing the regional security situation. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi received Momeni and his delegation at the airport, while Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry presented the visiting minister with a bouquet. Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam was also present. Welcoming the Iranian minister, Naqvi said, “I welcome my brother to Pakistan. I hope Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni has brought good news. I am confident his visit will further strengthen bilateral relations and lead to progress on regional issues. ” The Iranian delegation includes the governor-general of Sistan and Balochistan, Iran’s deputy interior minister, deputy minister for urban development and transport, the head of the National Iranian Oil Company, the special representative of Iran’s agriculture minister, and other senior officials. During the visit, Momeni is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, border cooperation, economic connectivity and the broader regional security environment. Following his arrival, Momeni also held talks with Mohsin Naqvi. The Iranian minister said he was pleased to meet his “brother” again and described Pakistan-Iran relations as exceptional, adding that the brotherly ties between the two neighbouring countries had grown stronger over time. He also praised the hospitality extended by the Pakistani government and people, saying he had always appreciated Pakistan’s sincerity and warmth. Naqvi expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations and create new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. The visit comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts to preserve the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reached between Iran and the United States last month to reduce tensions in the region. Pakistan has played an active diplomatic role since the crisis triggered by US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rattled global energy markets. On June 18, Pakistan brokered a 14-point Islamabad MOU between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending hostilities, reducing tensions and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international maritime traffic. Although the ceasefire later broke down, Islamabad has continued efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides and support broader regional peace initiatives.
