Iran to reverse-engineer captured US underwater drone: IRGC

Iran will begin reverse-engineering a US unmanned underwater vehicle captured by its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, an IRGC spokesman said on Tuesday. Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said the vessel contained advanced technology that had fallen into the hands of Iranian forces during the recent conflict with the United States and Israel. “The reverse engineering will begin, ” Mohebbi said, adding that the recent conflict had demonstrated Iran’s ability to counter advanced US military technology. The IRGC Navy said earlier this month that it had intercepted and captured a highly advanced US unmanned underwater vehicle near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz following what it described as a “complex intelligence and operational action”. Iranian media identified the vessel as the Dive-LD, an autonomous underwater vehicle developed by US defence technology company Anduril Industries and delivered to the US Navy in 2025. The capture comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported that analysts believe the captured vehicle is unlikely to give Iran a decisive military advantage, but its seizure represents a setback for Washington’s efforts to project technological superiority. Mohebbi also claimed that advanced US technology, including that used in the F-35 fighter jet, had been challenged by Iran’s military during the conflict.
