On 10 August 2026 at approximately 7: 00 p. m. , a severe windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall struck Sintcham Bassirou village in the Paunka Section of Sonaco Sector, Gabu Region, eastern Guinea-Bissau. The storm was characterized by strong winds and intense rainfall that caused significant destruction to residential structures and household property across the affected community. The impact of the storm was immediate, damaging and destroying homes, displacing families, and disrupting normal community life. Initial reports from local authorities and community leaders indicated widespread damage to housing and household belongings, prompting the Guinea-Bissau Red Cross (GBRC) to deploy assessment teams to verify the extent of the impact and identify priority humanitarian needs. Rapid assessments conducted jointly by GBRC, local authorities, and community representatives confirmed substantial damage to residential structures and household assets, as well as injuries among community members. The event occurred during the peak rainy season, when communities are already exposed to seasonal weather-related hazards, further increasing risks for affected families whose homes and belongings were damaged or destroyed. The situation remains a humanitarian concern as affected households continue to face shelter, health, protection, water, sanitation, and livelihood challenges resulting from the windstorm and heavy rainfall.
