Goat-head simulation helps dentists master oral surgery at IADSR

LAHORE: A realistic goat-head simulation became the centrepiece of an advanced oral surgery workshop at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR), giving dentists an opportunity to practice essential surgical techniques in a setting that closely mirrors real clinical procedures. Organized as part of the 21st Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD), the hands-on workshop was designed to strengthen participants’ practical competence in oral surgical procedures that form the backbone of everyday dental practice. The intensive training session was facilitated by Prof. Hafiz Shakir, BDS, MCPS (Oral Surgery), MDS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), a renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon and academician recognized for his expertise in clinical teaching and surgical education. Realistic surgical training beyond the classroom The workshop began with detailed demonstrations of suturing techniques, during which Prof. Hafiz Shakir explained the principles of wound closure, correct needle handling, appropriate suture material selection and the clinical applications of different suturing methods. Participants then practiced various suturing techniques under expert supervision, enabling them to refine precision, improve hand skills and build confidence in performing intraoral wound closures. However, the most anticipated segment of the workshop came when participants transitioned from demonstrations to simulated surgery. Goat-head simulation replicates real clinical scenarios Using goat heads as realistic training models, participants practiced soft tissue handling, incision design, wound management and surgical suturing in conditions that closely resemble real-life oral surgical procedures. The simulation offered dentists valuable tactile experience while allowing them to strengthen their surgical judgment and tissue-handling techniques in a safe educational environment before applying these skills to patient care. Educators increasingly recognize simulation-based training as an effective method for improving technical competence, reducing clinical errors and enhancing confidence among dental practitioners. Interactive learning encourages clinical problem-solving The workshop maintained a highly interactive format, encouraging participants to discuss practical challenges commonly encountered during oral surgery. Drawing upon his extensive clinical and academic experience, Prof. Hafiz Shakir shared evidence-based guidance on surgical decision-making and demonstrated practical solutions for managing routine oral surgical procedures more effectively. The discussions allowed participants to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world clinical application while refining their understanding of oral surgical principles. Building confident general dentists By the conclusion of the workshop, participants had significantly strengthened their understanding of suturing techniques, wound management and essential oral surgical skills required in general dental practice. The session concluded with overwhelmingly positive feedback, with attendees appreciating the opportunity to learn through realistic simulation and direct interaction with an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The workshop reflects IADSR’s continued commitment to competency-based continuing dental education by providing practicing dentists with practical, evidence-based training that enhances clinical confidence and supports higher standards of patient care.
