FIR lodged over social media ‘misuse’

ISLAMABAD: The city police on Friday registered a case against a citizen for a social media post comparing Tarnol Phatak (railway crossing) to the Strait of Hormuz and suggesting that closing it would resolve many problems. According to police, Tarnol Station House Officer registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Khurram Nazeer under Sections 188 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 511 (attempt to commit an offence) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PCC). The FIR states that Sub-Inspector Shahid Asghar, along with security personnel, was on routine patrol when they came across the viral post. The message claimed that Tarnol Phatak was “no less significant than the Strait of Hormuz” and if closed, many problems would be resolved. In an inquiry from some individuals, the police came to know that the post uploaded by Khurram Nazeer, son of Raja Muhammad Nazeer, a resident of Dhoke Paracha, Islamabad. The FIR states that in light of the prevailing security situation, the government had imposed Section 144, prohibiting such public announcements and social media content. The accused allegedly violated this order, which falls under offences punishable under Sections 188, 511, and 341 of the PPC. The police took the suspect into custody from Tarnol Chowk.
