Federal government announces Rs5m compensation to families of newborns killed in PIMS fire

The federal government on Thursday announced compensation of 5 million rupees each for the families of 14 newborns who died in a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. The government said in a statement that it shared the grief of the affected families, adding that financial compensation could not replace the lives lost. The assistance was intended to ease the difficulties faced by the grieving families and provide some relief, the government said, adding that it would provide all possible support to the affected families. The cause of the fire, safety arrangements and rescue operations are under investigation. An investigation committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had begun work. Its members visited the Fire Brigade Headquarters, recorded statements from personnel involved in the rescue operation and reviewed the timeline from the outbreak of the fire to the arrival of rescue teams. The committee also reviewed the response of the fire brigade and obstacles encountered during the rescue operation.
