FDI opens applications for global oral health fund offering up to CHF 10,000 per project

GENEVA: Dental organizations worldwide have been invited to apply for funding under the FDI World Dental Development Fund (WDDF), a global initiative aimed at improving oral health in underserved and disadvantaged communities through targeted, community-based projects. The FDI World Dental Federation announced that applications for the 2026 funding cycle are now open, with a submission deadline of June 15, 2026. The fund supports innovative oral health initiatives focused on expanding access to care, strengthening prevention strategies, and improving oral health education at community level. Funding support for community oral health projects Each year, the WDDF typically supports three to five projects, with selected initiatives receiving up to CHF 10, 000 (Swiss Franc), approximately equivalent to US$11, 000, per project. The funding is designed to help organizations develop and implement practical, scalable interventions that address oral health inequalities, particularly in low-resource or disadvantaged settings. Priority is given to projects aligned with at least one of the following areas: Oral health education Oral health promotion Oral disease prevention Oral healthcare delivery Integration of oral health into primary healthcare systems FDI emphasizes that successful applications should demonstrate clear community impact, educational value, and long-term sustainability. Focus on underserved communities The World Dental Development Fund is specifically targeted at improving oral health outcomes among populations facing barriers to dental care access. Applicants are expected to design projects in consultation with local stakeholders and align their proposals with regional or national health priorities. Global health experts continue to highlight oral diseases as among the most widespread non-communicable conditions worldwide, with untreated dental caries and gum disease affecting billions of people—particularly in low- and middle-income regions. Against this backdrop, preventive and community-based dental programs are increasingly viewed as essential to reducing long-term treatment burdens and improving overall health outcomes. Opportunity for dental institutions and NGOs The funding opportunity is open to dental associations, NGOs, academic institutions, and community-based organizations working in oral health promotion and care delivery. Projects with strong preventive focus, innovative outreach models, and measurable public health impact are expected to be competitive under the selection criteria. FDI says the initiative reflects its broader commitment to advancing global oral health while upholding principles of inclusiveness, integrity, excellence, and ethical practice. Application deadline approaching Interested organizations must submit applications by June 15, 2026. With only a limited number of projects selected each year, the program is positioned as a competitive opportunity for organizations seeking to address oral health disparities through sustainable, evidence-based interventions.
