There has been increasing realization that environmental issues are linked to the impact of disasters and that the way that humanitarian aid is provided can have positive or negative impacts on the environment. In some cases, the negative impacts can worsen, and prolong, disaster impacts or even subject disaster survivors to new disaster threats. While many of the environment-disaster links are known to experts, these links are often cross-sectoral and not easily identified or addressed in an often-siloed approach to humanitarian assistance. At a practical level, the speed with which humanitarian assistance needs to be provided limits the time available to research and define solutions for environment-assistance challenges. This Ethiopia Country Environment Profile provides humanitarian staff with a quick access to summary information about key environmental issues encountered in humanitarian operations. This quick access enables humanitarian personnel to identify specific environmental issues which are relevant to their humanitarian efforts, together with links to additional information which can be used to formulate the best way to link the environment to successful humanitarian operations. The Ethiopia Country Environment Profile has been developed with the support of the Ethiopia Shelter and NFI Cluster. However, the document takes a shelter and settlements approach and is generally useful for most types of humanitarian operation. While the Profile is not an evaluation, audit or assessment, it does contain suggestions to address environmental issues encountered in humanitarian operations in the country. Responding to these suggestions is up to the humanitarian partners working in Ethiopia based on their priorities and resources.
