Dentists can detect early signs of smoking-related harm

KARACHI: Smoking-related harm can become visible in the mouth before patients recognise health consequences, placing dentists in a key position to identify warning signs and encourage intervention, according to dental surgeon Prof Dr Aqeel Shaikh. “The effects of smoking are often first visible in the oral cavity, ” Dr Shaikh said, noting that routine dental examinations can reveal changes linked to tobacco use even when patients seek treatment for concerns. Smoking can stain teeth, cause persistent bad breath and contribute to gum disease. It may also delay healing after dental procedures and increase the risk of tooth loss and oral cancer. Damage to the gums and supporting bone can loosen teeth, while persistent ulcers, unexplained pain, bleeding gums or unusual patches inside the mouth may require professional assessment. Because dentists regularly examine oral tissues, dental visits can serve a broader preventive purpose. Alongside diagnosing and treating oral conditions, practitioners can ask patients about smoking, explain the associated risks and encourage cessation before further damage occurs. Quitting tobacco and nicotine use completely remains the best option for protecting health. However, some adults continue to smoke despite repeated efforts to stop. Dr Shaikh said informed discussions with healthcare professionals can help such patients better understand the risks of continued smoking and the approaches available to reduce them. “Engaging in evidence-based conversations on Tobacco Harm Reduction can support better oral and overall health, ” he said. Dr Shaikh also urged smokers not to dismiss recurring oral symptoms, particularly those that fail to resolve. Early examination may allow potentially serious conditions to be identified sooner and create another opportunity for cessation support. His remarks highlight the role dental professionals can play beyond treatment: recognising early signs of harm, guiding patients towards quitting and supporting informed decisions that protect both oral and overall health.
