Death of 15 kids at PIMS tragic: PPPP SG

ISLAMABAD: Secretary General of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, while speaking to the media at PIMS, said that the Hospital is an extremely tragic and distressing incident. He said the incident appears to be the result of serious negligence and dereliction of duty, and demanded a transparent and impartial inquiry to determine the facts. Nayyer Hussain Bukhari said the inquiry must establish why the tragedy occurred and who was responsible. The performance of the concerned ministry must also be examined. If the authorities are unable to properly manage even two hospitals, the concerned minister and officials must be held accountable. He said the present situation reflects a serious failure of governance. “The system does not appear to be functioning, and effective governance is nowhere to be seen, ” he said. He added that whenever such tragedies occur, the public is justified in questioning whether there is a serious problem of bad governance. “It is painful to say that if all hospitals across the country were being managed under the same supervision, the situation could be even more alarming. Failure to manage two hospitals is a matter of grave concern, ” Bukhari said. He said the innocent and young children could not be provided adequate protection, resulting in the loss of precious lives. The parents of the deceased children must be included in the inquiry process, kept fully informed of the facts, and given satisfactory answers. Nayyer Hussain Bukhari said negligence and shortcomings on the part of the hospital administration must also be thoroughly investigated. If the emergency gate was not opened at the critical time, responsibility for this failure must also be determined. He further said that the presence of gas cylinders inside hospital wards raises another serious question regarding safety arrangements. The hospital’s safety protocols and the responsibilities of the administration must be comprehensively reviewed to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The PPPP Secretary General demanded that the inquiry be completed transparently, those responsible be identified and proceeded against in accordance with the law, and justice be provided to the bereaved families.
