‘Construction of 27 mega water storage tanks fast-tracked’

LAHORE: To combat urban flooding and secure water resources before the monsoon season hits, the Punjab Housing Department has fast-tracked the construction of 27 mega water storage tanks across 15 districts, backed by a historically high budget allocation. In this connection, Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin visited the Chauburji Underground Water Storage Tank project site on Tuesday; he was accompanied by Punjab Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal. On this occasion, the Minister directed all officers to personally supervise the projects in the field and ensure their completion before the onset of the monsoon season. He further stated that, for the first time in the province’s history, such a substantial budget has been allocated for rainwater storage and drainage. He also instructed that parks and other public amenities be developed at the surface level above all underground water tanks as soon as possible. He emphasised that there should be no compromise on quality, pace of work, transparency, or safety measures. He added that, in line with the vision of the Punjab Chief Minister, providing citizens with modern infrastructure and public facilities remains the top priority. During a briefing, the secretary informed the minister that 13 out of the total 18 underground water storage tanks in Lahore have already become fully operational. He further stated that work on the Chauburji Underground Water Tank is being completed in record time. These underground water storage tanks will help protect various low-lying urban areas from urban flooding, he added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
